8 steps to become a Data Scientist and they are not easy at all!!!

This infographic created by DataCamp is the best routine I think to become a data scientist. Bad news is it is not easy to complete this agenda since it requires a long-term commitment, and time could take up to equivalently 2 years of postgraduate study.

I had a chance to put my hands on most of these things in the map when pursuing a degree in Data Science at Monash. However, there are some tools that are not quite relevant to current time such as Hadoop and Spotfire (never heard of this name till the time of writing this article) because of rapid progression in technology. We see cutting-edge technology emerging every day, so your skill set also needs to stay up-to-date with the change.

Nevertheless, learning to use Data Science tools just helps to solve the HOW, the core part is that you have to really understand the mathematics and theory lying behind each machine learning technique to know the WHY. Knowing HOW is easy, but knowing WHY is much harder since mathematics is crucial in data science, just like other scientific fields. Many people may feel uncomfortable when it comes to linear algebra, multivariate calculus, probability or descriptive statistics, etc. Well, at this point I would say "no pain no gain"!!!

In my opinion, playing around and being familiar with data problems is the best way to become a great data scientist. So get your hands as much dirty as possible.

Now, let’s begin a fascinating journey.
